Roofing on the western side of Hornsby

Hornsby West is not a separate suburb with its own postcode. It is the name people use for the western side of Hornsby, and it goes back a long way: there is an 1898 subdivision plan under that title held in the State Library collection. Today it describes the streets west of the station and the rail corridor, running out toward Galston Road and the ground that falls away into the valley.

A mixed patch

The west side is less uniform than the residential streets east of the line. Industry has occupied parts of the north-western side of Hornsby for a long time, and the northern end of the suburb carries a major railway workshop, so alongside the houses there are commercial and light-industrial roofs with long-run metal sheeting, box gutters and skylights.

Residentially it runs from post-war brick-and-tile near the centre to larger, steeper, more heavily treed blocks as you head west.

What that means for the work

Houses. The usual Hornsby picture: concrete tile roofs with failed pointing and a tired surface, valleys choked with litter, gutters that have rusted from the back. Mostly restoration and gutter work.

Commercial and industrial. Fastener and lap condition, flashings, skylight surrounds and box gutters. Box gutters are the ones that cause real damage when they block, because there is no overflow path that does not run inside the building.

The western edge. Steeper, leafier, and closer to the bushland, which brings the usual combination of constant leaf load and, on land mapped as bushfire prone, AS 3959 detailing.
